IELTS preparation (3): 5 Tips on the Speaking Section

Today I'll be sharing with you 5 tips on how to pass your IELTS speaking section successfully. Even though it's the shortest one (11-14 minutes), it is still one of the most difficult ones because you only have a couple of minutes to convince your examiner that you actually can speak. Hence, you need to learn a) to speak fast; b) to be brief and to the point; c) to use appropriate expressions for appropriate situations. Those of you who have already tried talking about "the person they most admire" for just 1 minute may understand that it is not a walk in the park. Hence, you might be able to use some tips on learning how to speak well. So, today I'm offering 5 tips and hope they will be useful to you!

I have mentioned ted.com as a great platform to listen to people talk on a wide variety of subjects. Add this page to your favorites and practice your listening, as well as take notes to develop your winning monologue strategies.

A book takes a life of its own: Mona Simpson reflects on her book "My Hollywood"

Writing a book may seem like an easy task to some, but only when we read one do we realize that true word craftsmanship extends our consciousness and reaches far beyond the tangible word meanings to where we can no longer contain the text and confine the story to the limits of our own imagination. Like a bird when released from the cage, a story first may first seem timid, as if hesitating and making up its mind. Then it soars up in the sky, unleashed and unashamed, singing its own song for the world to admire. It took about 10 years for an American novelist, Mona Simpson, to write My Hollywood. Listen to the following interview with her to learn more about the mystery of a book "writing itself."

Whitney Houston: Before and After Drugs

Her voice could not have been mistaken for anybody else's. It would pierce through your entire being, giving you the chills, stopping your breath and slowing down your heartbeat. She shot to fame in the 1990s making hit after hit, including the most memorable I Will Always Love You. Her most remarkable performance though took place in 1991 at Super Bowl XXV at Tampa Stadium. Her signing, flawless, impeccable, and incredibly powerful shook the stadium and the world at large.

The sad part of her life is her very public struggle with drugs which she claimed to have won, at the expense of her inimitable voice. She died alone, on February 11, 2012, most likely as a result of a drug overdose. In an interview with Diane Sawyer ten years ago she confessed, "My greatest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy." Below you can watch Whitney's legendary performance at the 1991 Super Bowl, and her 2008 performance, shortly after the rehabilitation program.

Online Classroom Experience

Practice some Cockney English!

Now that you know some of the characteristics of the Cockney English dialect as it was presented by George Bernard Shaw in "Pygmalion" I would like to share a fun video made by Gareth Jameson, an actor and speaking coach from London, England. Mr. Jameson has a website through which he offers his services to a great audience attempting to perfect their speech. The name of the website though may sound quite ambiguous to an American reader.

What language did Eliza Doolittle speak in "Pygmalion?"

Professor Higgins had a challenging task before him as he had to train an uneducated flower girl how to speak properly. At the beginning of the 20th century the proper pronunciation played an essential role to securing a good job and thus guaranteed financial stability. Actually, the trend hasn't changed much since the play was written in 1912. To this day, you can get more business overseas if you speak clearly and effortlessly and if your accent is not as discernible.

"Pygmalion" celebrates 100 in 2012: Meet Professor Higgins!

Image 1
In the preface to the 1916 edition of "Pygmalion", George Bernard Shaw expressed his idea for creating Henry Higgins, the English Phonetics Professor, in the following words, "the reformer England needs ... an energetic phonetic enthusiast: that is why I have made such a one the hero of a popular play."

"Pygmalion" Ready to Celebrate its 100 Birthday!

Eliza Doolittle
Very few people know that 2012 will mark a 100 Birthday of one of the most unique plays written by George Bernard Shaw titled "Pygmalion" (1912). In Greek mythology, Pygmalion was known as the creator of a female sculpture that came to life. The fascination with Greek mythology impacted quite a number of English playwrights of the time, Mr. Shaw being one of them.

In the play, Mr. Henry Higgins, the early 20th century Phonetics professor and the perfectionist of the standard English pronunciation, makes a bet with his colleague, Pickering, that it would take him 6 months to turn a bedraggled street girl, Eliza Doolittle, into a refined lady simply by teaching her to speak properly. Exactly how did Eliza Doolittle come to being?

121. Language death: one language becomes extinct every two weeks

Have you ever thought that our life can be traced, recorded and remembered as long as our language continues to exist? There are approximately 6,500 languages in the world, half of which will disappear by the end of the century. An alarming statistics indicates that currently one language is disappearing every 14 days! For example, Berbice Dutch (a Dutch creole) spoken in part of Guyana (a country in South America) has been declared officially extinct according to the March issue 2010 of National Geographic magazine.

107. People of England: Prince William and Catherine Middleton

The wedding between Prince William and Catherine Middleton seems to have magnetized people from all over the world. Millions of people have been "glued" to their TV screens to watch the beautiful royal wedding.

Prince William was born on June 21, 1982, the elder son of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. He received his education in four schools of the UK and completed his degree at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Following his mother's example William was involved into a variety of charities, raising awareness of AIDS/HIV, working with inner-city disadvantaged groups, granting patronage to a charity that assists the homeless people.

103. Dead Man Walking: a Life, a Book, a Movie...

"Funny how we get so exact about time at the end of life and at its beginning. She died at 6:08 or 3:46, we say, or the baby was born at 4:02. But in between we slosh through huge swatches of time - weeks, months, years, decades even."

"The valley of the victimized in this country is wide and deep and growing. In such a sea of pain what can one person do? Better, I decide, to try to help ten real hurting people - or nine, or one - than to be overwhelmed and withdraw and do nothing - or write a paper on The Problem of Evil."

These are some of the extracts from the book by Sister Helen Prejean "Dead Man Walking." It's a real-life story, and the reason why it has been of interest to me is that I live in the area where the events of the book took place. Just several hours away is a world unlike anywhere else in America.

94. Advanced Listening: RSA Animate - what makes us better workers?

We sometimes think that the more money we get as a reward, the better accomplishments at work we will make. However, research shows quite the opposite. While rewarding somebody for completing a tedious, routine task pays off, a project that requires creativity and non-standard thinking must never be motivated by a high reward, otherwise the quality will be poor or the task will never be accomplished at all. Watch the following RSA video to discover how and why such motivation never works. Your comments are welcome. The video is used with the permission of RSA-Animate.

93. Intermediate Reading: Non-Traditional Daily Routines Text

We are so used to reading texts about one's routines: "I get up, I take my shower, have breakfast, and go to school/work..." I have always wondered if one could find a more authentic text about one's daily routines, very different, yet very human. This weekend I have been reading an autobiography by Rebecca Walker "Black, White and Jewish," and have come across an excerpt where she writes about her daily routines in a very unusual way. Please, read it, complete the assignments below, and practice reading with the audio. Note the use of the Present Simple tense. [The extract is published with the permission of the author].

The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) has attempted to find an answer to this dilemma. This 10-minute presentation will focus on people's thinking patterns, the way thinking determines our choices, actions, and destiny. Please, watch the video and complete the assignments below. This video is only for Upper-Intermediate or Advanced level students. This video is used with the permission of RSA-Animate.
