Как воспитать детей-билингвов? Выпуск №2.

В прошлой статье мы начали разговор о том, как воспитать детей-билингвов. Для того, чтобы поподробнее узнать, как же научить детей говорить на двух языках одинаково уверенно, мы побеседовали с интересной двуязычной семьей, в которой папа всегда говорил со своими четырьмя детьми по-русски, а мама - по-английски. Кстати, вот и мама - Эйми Швед. Беседовать с ней я буду, естественно, по-английски.

In most families mothers usually spend more time with their kids than dads do. This means that the ratio of a child exposure to mom’s language is greater. Would you say that this situation makes kids more proficient in their mom’s language? Why/Why not?

Tips from Mrs. Caroline Germond on How to Master Foreign Languages

Elena Mutonono and Mrs. Caroline Germond
September, 2012: New Orleans, LA
Mastering a foreign language presents a number of challenges, but consistent learning and practicing will eventually pay off, and you will become more fluent in the language you wish to learn.

The students that have been taught by Mrs. Caroline Germond on our OnlinEnglish platform have seen some significant improvements in their English proficiency over a relatively short time. All of them realize, however, that mastering a language is not a one-time purchase, but a life-long journey of discovery.

A Fascinating Interview with George Sandford: Part 2

Yesterday I shared with you the first part of our interview with George Sandford, a Business English Magazine editor, a teacher, writer, and consultant. His textbooks are unique in content and approach. I invite you to read the second part of our interview where Mr. Sandford will share about his experience of working in Poland and say more about his textbook on English for Human Resources Personnel.

Q:
Personally, I have never seen a textbook to train HR personnel until I came across your book. Is there a growing demand for this type of English language training or would you call yourself a pioneer? How does this book help an HR manager to excel in her job?

A book takes a life of its own: Mona Simpson reflects on her book "My Hollywood"

Writing a book may seem like an easy task to some, but only when we read one do we realize that true word craftsmanship extends our consciousness and reaches far beyond the tangible word meanings to where we can no longer contain the text and confine the story to the limits of our own imagination. Like a bird when released from the cage, a story first may first seem timid, as if hesitating and making up its mind. Then it soars up in the sky, unleashed and unashamed, singing its own song for the world to admire. It took about 10 years for an American novelist, Mona Simpson, to write My Hollywood. Listen to the following interview with her to learn more about the mystery of a book "writing itself."

Whitney Houston: Before and After Drugs

Her voice could not have been mistaken for anybody else's. It would pierce through your entire being, giving you the chills, stopping your breath and slowing down your heartbeat. She shot to fame in the 1990s making hit after hit, including the most memorable I Will Always Love You. Her most remarkable performance though took place in 1991 at Super Bowl XXV at Tampa Stadium. Her signing, flawless, impeccable, and incredibly powerful shook the stadium and the world at large.

The sad part of her life is her very public struggle with drugs which she claimed to have won, at the expense of her inimitable voice. She died alone, on February 11, 2012, most likely as a result of a drug overdose. In an interview with Diane Sawyer ten years ago she confessed, "My greatest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy." Below you can watch Whitney's legendary performance at the 1991 Super Bowl, and her 2008 performance, shortly after the rehabilitation program.

Perfect Tenses in Action

The use of perfect tenses in everyday conversation sets you apart as an advanced learner of the English language. Perfect tenses are different in that they have no similar structure in the Russian language, and can either be translated into Russian either as the past tense or present tense verbs (see more information here in Russian). Since there is nothing exactly like the Perfect tenses in Russian, Russian speakers of English tend to make the same, very basic mistakes. The good news is you can master this tense form if you realize three important things:

72. Intermediate Listening: Audrey Hepburn (3)

71. Intermediate Listening: Audrey Hepburn (2)

Here is the second part of a three-part program about Audrey Hepburn. Watch it and complete the assignments in the comments line.

70. Intermediate Listening: Audrey Hepburn (1)

This post is a part of a three-part program on Audrey Hepburn. The story is beautiful because it is shared by Audrey's son, Sean Hepburn Ferrer who was asked to relate the story of Audrey, an actress, a mother, and the "best friend." Audrey Hepburn's story has touched a great number of people, and I hope that it will touch you as well. Her life was beautiful because she chose to live a part of it not for her own sake, but for the sake of others. We can truly live when we are willing to give what is most precious to us in this life to those who need it most...
