T-O-N-I-C resume-writing principles: stay in shape!

If your goal is to write a successful resume you should consider these five key factors (they're easy to remember because they spell out the word "TONIC"):

  1. Take time: You only have one chance to impress your potential employer, so putting together a sloppy, last-minute two-pager is not going to help. Take time to think through the following features: design, paper and printer quality, envelope, and envelope labels (if you have to mail it).

How to design a winning Business English course: 5 tips and resources

If you're an English teacher and you teach Business English this post is for you! Today I'd like to share 5 tips and resources that will give you infinite ideas on teaching Business English to your students! Business English can be a fun class if you know what you are doing and where you're going. Otherwise it will be something in-between a General English course with a few, limited, Business English resources.

Your limited resources don't necessarily have to reflect on your teaching. To conduct a superb Business English course, find several resources online and arrange them according to the length of the course, the level of your students, and the relevant topics. The length of the course will determine how many lessons you will have. The level of your students will determine the choice of materials. The topics, relevant to your audience will help you narrow down your range of themes to customize the course for your students. Here're 5 guidelines for you:

A Fascinating Interview with George Sandford: Part 2

Yesterday I shared with you the first part of our interview with George Sandford, a Business English Magazine editor, a teacher, writer, and consultant. His textbooks are unique in content and approach. I invite you to read the second part of our interview where Mr. Sandford will share about his experience of working in Poland and say more about his textbook on English for Human Resources Personnel.

Q:
Personally, I have never seen a textbook to train HR personnel until I came across your book. Is there a growing demand for this type of English language training or would you call yourself a pioneer? How does this book help an HR manager to excel in her job?

A Fascinating Interview with George Sandford: Part 1

George Sandford,
image: www.english4hr.com
George Sandford is a Business English tutor and consultant who is originally from England but is now working in Poland. His website, "English4HR", relates his incredible success story: "Born in Manchester and brought up in London, from a childhood of illiteracy and dyslexia, George has made an incredible journey that has taken him through national and commercial radio appearances, community work, international conferences, working with management gurus and publishing with Cambridge University Press."

I first came across George Sandford's work through some twitter update. Then I started reading his blog, learned more about his textbooks on his website and realized that this teacher's contribution to the Human Resources language training is unique and very valuable! Just a week ago I wrote to him and asked for an interview, and he responded my five questions about his work in Poland, his experience teaching Business English and why it is important, as well as his textbooks. Today I'm posting the first part of our interview, and tomorrow you'll read the rest! This is a unique interview given to OnlinEnglish.

Do you feel confident when writing in English? According to the research conducted by A.V. 94. Advanced Listening: RSA Animate - what makes us better workers?

We sometimes think that the more money we get as a reward, the better accomplishments at work we will make. However, research shows quite the opposite. While rewarding somebody for completing a tedious, routine task pays off, a project that requires creativity and non-standard thinking must never be motivated by a high reward, otherwise the quality will be poor or the task will never be accomplished at all. Watch the following RSA video to discover how and why such motivation never works. Your comments are welcome. The video is used with the permission of RSA-Animate.

73. English for Managers and Business Consultants: New Year's Resolutions

There is a very common New Year's tradition in English-speaking countries. On the New Year's Eve people write down a list of their New Year's resolutions (goals or plans) that they would like to achieve in the coming year. Some want to lose weight, others to gain it. Some resolve to start working out on January 1, while others decide to go on a vacation to some exotic country. At the end of the year such list with New Year's resolutions is reviewed again to see what has been achieved. Have you written your list yet?

However, one of the most challenging tasks is not to write the list, but to "stick to it". The business consultant in the following video gives some practical advice on how to attain your New Year's resolutions. Please, watch the video and complete the assignment below.
