124. Decor 101: It's all about the details.

In my previous post I wrote a little about the concept of finding storage in your apartment. One of the hardest things for me has always been the challenge of keeping your space "clutter-free." What clutters my rooms? There are three major things: paper, books, and office supplies. I find it easy to keep everything else where it belongs, however, when it comes to stationary and books it gets a bit tricky. If I were to put all of our family's books in the living room it would turn into a small public library, and you do not want your living room to be so startling. So, surprisingly, I found a little corner in my laundry room where I thought I'd hide yet another book case. Then it dawned on me that I should probably hide these books somehow so they don't look "out of place." Here's what I did:

Decor 101: Discovering a flair for effective and elegant storage

I believe a person's talent is expressed most fully when they're able to create something out of virtually nothing and completely lose track of time while working on a single project. By the same token, whenever we lack the gifting in a particular area we find ourselves in a stupor when faced even with a simple task, our productivity goes down, we get bored and spend our time watching the clock hand moving. "Time flies when you're having fun," people say in English meaning when you enjoy something your time will fly and you will not consider this "work."

This summer, as my husband and I have moved into a new apartment, my desire has been to explore the not-so-gifted interior designer living inside me to see if it is actually possible to develop a flair for something outside of your gifting. One of the greatest challenges, as I'm sure many of my readers will share, is the ability to find storage in a small apartment, especially when you have a few hundreds of books.

Decor 101: Yard sale/Garage sale

Garage sales (or yard sales) have been an integral part of American culture since the 1960s. Generally, a yard sale is put together in spring when a family takes on a project of cleaning up their house (or garage) of the items they don't need. The venue for the yard sale can be one's front- or backyard, a carport, or a garage. The articles sold at such sales are mostly kitchen utensils, mismatched furniture, used toys, board games, random knickknacks, and clothing.

Decor 101: The Housewarming party

For the majority of American families moving houses happens much more frequently than for Ukrainian or Russian families. A relocation is usually associated with a different stage in life. For instance, eager to enjoy their independence, young adults move in pursuit of education (or perhaps just the fun student life), new career opportunities, and marriage. On the contrary, senior citizens choose relocation as a way of coping with their "empty nest" feeling once the children are gone or in an attempt to improve their health (in this case they follow their doctor's advice to move into a warmer climate).

Decor 101: Creating an office space in a small apartment

Moving apartments or houses has never inspired me much. However, there are times when you have to do that, and there's no way around it. In exactly five weeks my husband and I will be moving into a new apartment complex, and even though the reality hasn't quite sunk in yet I'm already feeling its inevitable approach. Yet, this doesn't seem to scare me a bit. In fact, I have been rather enthused about the possibility of decorating our apartment, as it will be completely unfurnished.

101. Life in a Bubble house. Part 2

Bubble houses are thought to be the most hurricane-proof structures, and a number of people living in the areas prone to such disasters are choosing dome-shaped houses over "boxes." For most others, however, round homes translate into high class, luxurious lifestyle, expensive whims, and long-term investment. Look at some pictures of the great designer Pierre Cardine's bubble house in the south of France.

100. Life in a Bubble house. Part 1

Imagine living in a bubble... Waking up on the round bed, eating at a round table, walking through round doors and looking out of eye-shaped windows. You may have trouble finding furniture to furnish a house like that or a corner to get your child into a timeout, as is so convenient in other "typical" houses, but, according to Antti Lovag, the architect of the first bubble house, you will feel much more "at home" living exactly in a bubble house. Behind the idea of creating a futuristic-looking abode is the desire to design the space that would most likely fit a human being's physiological and psychological needs.
